History of Sringeri

Adi Shankara, the celebrated philosopher-saint who revived Advaita Vedanta, chose Sringeri as one of his main centers of spiritual enlightenment.

During his walk along the splendid Tunga River, something truly remarkable caught his eye. In the blazing heat, a frog desperately sought shelter, only to be surprised by a compassionate cobra that unfurled its hood, offering shade. Witnessing this extraordinary scene, the Acharya was deeply touched by the inherent sanctity of the place. He then decided to establish the Sringeri Temple and laid the foundation for its glorious legacy. Adi Shankara's presence is still felt strongly in Sringeri, drawing countless devotees who seek his blessings and guidance.

This ceremonial procession takes place through Chandramoulishwara Hall. Following this, the idol of Sharadamba, usually kept at Vyakhyana Simhasana, is brought into a resplendent golden chariot.

The Rathotsava, or chariot procession, is conducted three times within the temple corridor, accompanied by Veda Ghosha (chanting of Vedic hymns), Vadya Ghosha (instrumental music), and the presence of Chatra-Chamara (royal umbrella and fan).
